![]() ![]() ![]() It’s bad! And Winslet, who returns to HBO a decade after starring in Todd Haynes’s Mildred Pierce adaptation and who increasingly in her career has chosen these kind of brittle, inflexible characters ( Ammonite is not a love story, people!), excels here, imbuing all of Mare’s physicality and facial expressions with some degree of annoyance. The woman who has cancer and whose daughter has disappeared into thin air is somehow the focus of Mare’s ire and defensiveness. Her family and friends, her co-workers and boss - and most gallingly, the mother of the missing girl who Mare failed to find the year before. The chip on her shoulder is a mountain range, and every person seems to irritate her. ![]() And now Easttown has two, with detective Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet) in the middle. Easttown is in free fall - no economy to speak of, opioid addiction on the rise, a pervasive kind of malaise - but nothing jolts a community quite like a murder. One young woman disappeared a year ago in Easttown, Pennsylvania. Winslet currently appears in the Avatar: The Way of Water feature film.Is it a prestige cable crime drama if a young woman doesn’t die in the first episode? I’m sorry to be so cynical, but Mare of Easttown begins with an upsetting amount of familiarity. And I know it would do that again, it would have to, if I was going to give people what they want and ultimately deserve, to see out of Mare Sheehan. I can’t just go, ‘Oh yes, let’s just do it again.‘ It’s a colossal, colossal commitment and did really take a huge amount out of me. ![]() It’s not a case of being away for months and months and months on end or anything, but a lot goes into it. It made me realize, ‘Oh my god, if I go to work now, it really hurts,’ and I have to look after myself. Coming out the other side was frighteningly hard. It was a lot for me to play that character. So the question is, do you quit while you’re ahead? Do you hold your head high and say, ‘Look at what we did, I’m so proud of that’ and just walk away? Or do we go for it again? How would it evolve? It was all so good and it was way more success and prominent as a piece of television than I think any of us could have anticipated or hoped for, and we all feel enormously proud of what we were able to do. How would that evolve? Those are questions none of us can answer right now. This is going to get quoted and re-quoted. It’s a tricky one, being honest about…Oh god, here we go. All I can say is no decision has been made. Winslet said the following about the future of the HBO series, per Indie Wire: Julianne Nicholson, Jean Smart, Angourie Rice, Evan Peters, Guy Pearce, Cailee Spaeny, David Denman, John Douglas Thompson, Patrick Murney, James McArdle, Sosie Bacon, Joe Tippett, and Neal Huff also star in the series, which follows a Pennsylvania detective, Marianne “Mare” Sheehan, as she investigates a teenage mother’s murder while trying to keep her own personal life from falling apart. The actress is conflicted about making another season of the limited series, partly because playing Mare was ‘frighteningly hard’ for her. Mare of Easttown fans have been waiting to see if the HBO series will return for a second season and star Kate Winslet spoke about the series in a recent podcast appearance. ![]()
